5 Makeup Mistakes That Could Make You Look Older

Makeup is supposed to be the finishing touch that gives us confidence. But here’s what many women don’t realize: The way you apply your makeup could be adding years to your appearance.

Here are the top 5 makeup mistakes that can make you look older… and what you can do to roll back the clock.

Makeup Mistake #1: Heavy foundation

Foundation is a great way to smooth out your skin tone and give you a flawless, airbrushed look… if you don’t overdo it.

Many women make the mistake of layering on their foundation, but thick layers can create a mask-like effect. Even worse, heavy foundation also has a way of settling into — and magnifying — every tiny line and crevice on your face. That can add years to your appearance.

Fast Fix: Try a mineral foundation instead. You can get luminous, breathable coverage without that heavy, caked-on look.

Makeup Mistake #2: Frosty eye shadow

Metallic and shimmery shades may look pretty in the container… but once you’re out of your teen years, it’s tough to pull them off.

It’s tricky because the eye area is a notorious trouble spot for dryness. Applying frosty shadows to dry eyelids creates an uneven, wrinkled look.

Fast Fix: Choose an eye shadow with a matte finish to avoid that crepe-like look.

Makeup Mistake #3: The wrong blush

Somewhere along the way we’ve been conditioned to stay away from certain colors of blush. When we were younger, this healthy fear probably kept us from looking like clowns with bright red cheeks.

But as we get a little older, dusty shades of blush can make us look washed out, leaving behind a dull, ashen appearance. Dark blush is also a surefire way to emphasize sunken cheeks.

Fast Fix: Try a light shade of pink or creamy peach to illuminate your face. Sweep it lightly in a circular motion over the apples of your cheeks up toward your temples. Blend with a makeup sponge for a natural glow.

Makeup Mistake #4: Dark lipstick

This is an age-accelerator for two reasons. First, dark lipstick creates sharp edges and stark contrast that can give you a harsh look. But that’s not all. The color can bleed down into the tiny vertical lines around your mouth and attach itself to your teeth as well.

On top of that, it makes your features appear smaller. Nobody wants a smaller pout!

Fast Fix: To keep your look youthful, go for a more natural shade of lipstick that complements your skin tone and hair color. A dab of gloss in the center of the bottom lip is a youthful touch.

Makeup Mistake #5: Forgetting to start with a clean canvas

To be agelessly beautiful, it’s important to start with clean, moisturized skin. I always follow an easy, three-step skincare routine every day, and the results have really paid off.

The first thing you want to do is clear out the pollutants and dirt that can clog pores. I use a purifying cleanser with rose hip seed oil. (It’s called Splash.) It has a special blend of essential oils and plant extracts to keep my skin youthful. Best of all, it has no parabens, mineral oil, petroleum or artificial fragrances.

After cleansing, you’ll want to apply a revitalizing toner. I know a lot of women are tempted to skip this step… but it takes just a few seconds and you can really see the difference. I use CoQ-Tone because it has CoQ10 and hyaluronic acid (HA). I love it for evening out my skin tone, making my pores appear smaller and helping my skin hold on to moisture.

The final quick step is moisturizer. I love Revive because it makes my skin feel really hydrated, and that fights wrinkles. I really feel it slows down and seems to actually reverse the signs of aging.

With a little TLC for your complexion and some smart makeup moves, you’ll be “Aging Backwards” in no time.

Mineral Mania

Just a few years ago, mineral makeup wasn’t easy to come by and usually sported a big price tag. These days, mineral makeup in the form of foundation, blush, eye shadow and more can be found at just about any drug store or makeup counter. Brand competition has made it quite affordable.

So, what’s all the hype about? Women love mineral makeup, especially those women with sensitive skin. It is made from crushed minerals such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, mica and iron oxides. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are natural sunscreens, so mineral makeups provide the extra “perk” of sun protection.

Most conventional cosmetics contain chemicals, dyes, fragrances, talc and other ingredients that can irritate skin or create a chalky or oily appearance. True mineral makeup without additives can provide excellent, natural-looking coverage plus sun protection. When choosing mineral makeup, it’s important to read the labels to ensure there are no sneaky additives. Even natural additives can cause irritation.

One ingredient, bismuth oxychloride, also called “synthetic pearl,” is used to add shimmer to some products. While it is natural, it may also be irritating to sensitive skin. Certain cosmetic companies want you to believe that their mineral foundation is so pure you can sleep in it. Dermatologists do not recommend sleeping in makeup no matter how natural it is. Any makeup will block your pores, and blocked pores can harbor bacteria leading to pimples and even infection.

Mineral makeup products are very easy to apply, which is another reason they have become so popular. A little buff with a makeup puff and you’re out the door. The competition in the mineral makeup arena has been a boon to women everywhere bringing the prices down to size. That’s good news, considering a 2008 survey by the website feelunique.com revealed that women would cut back on food to pay for cosmetics.

When Life Hands You Lemons

Dear Beauty Conscious Reader,

The simple lemon — available year-round and relatively cheap — offers all kinds of health and beauty benefits.

In fact, lemons have been prominent throughout history for the perks they offer. According to lore, the ladies of Louis XIV’s (1638-1715) court bit into lemons to keep their lips seductively red. Romans even valued the lemon as an antidote to all poisons.

Right now, California and Arizona produce around 95 percent of America’s lemon crop, according to Sunkist.com. The two major varieties of lemons are Lisbon and Eureka, but they’re so similar that even the experts have a hard time telling them apart. The Meyer Lemon, discovered by Frank N. Meyer in 1908, is thought to be a cross between a lemon and an orange or mandarin.

Regardless of name or origin, lemons are natural refreshers. There are many ways you can take advantage of their native properties. Enjoy the following lemony tips:

1) Highlight your hair. When I was growing up, my blond friends mixed lemon with a little salt and water and then let the sun naturally “streak” their hair. We brunettes never tried it, but I remember it worked well for blond hair. It can be drying, so I don’t recommend trying it too often.

2) Make lemonade. You know the old saying, “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.” Squeezing lemon juice into your water can make it taste and smell better. If you don’t like too much tartness, add a little natural sweetener, such as stevia. You can also freeze lemon juice in ice trays and add those to your water — refreshing!

3) Liven up your veggies. After sautéing my veggies, I like to squeeze fresh lemon over them. This brings out the color and flavor. A little sprinkle of sea salt from the grinder adds just the right touch, too.

4) Thin your salad dressing. Cut salad dressing calories by thinning your serving with fresh-squeezed lemon juice. The dressing spreads more uniformly throughout your salad so you use less.

5) Remove cooking odors. If you rub your hands with lemons dipped in salt, it can help remove cooking odors like garlic, onions and fish. After all, what would you rather smell like – fish or lemons?

Cool Tips for Hot Lips

Ladies, where would we be without our makeup?

Famous makeup guru Max Factor once said, “A woman who doesn’t wear lipstick feels undressed in public. Unless she works on a farm.”

And TIME magazine reported as far back as 1958 that, “The beauty industry fears no recession, for a woman will give up food before her pursuit of beauty – and often because of it.”1

Apparently, things haven’t changed much since 1958. Fifty years later, in 2008, beauty retail website feelingunique.com asked 1,000 women in the UK about their shopping habits. They found that nearly one in three female respondents said they would prefer to eat less than reduce their spending on “essential” beauty items.2 In the survey, 75 percent of the women considered makeup and body treatments as “everyday essentials” rather than luxury items.

So, how did we get to this place? Well, the desire to look beautiful and adorn the face is nothing new. In fact, the origin of lipstick dates back to 5,000 BC in the Sumerian region of Ur, according to Jessica Pallingston, author of Lipstick: A Celebration of a Girl’s Best Friend. Ancient Egyptians loved lip paints and were masters at mixing color and precise application, Pallingston also maintains.3 Perhaps the most famous Egyptian woman, Cleopatra, was said to have used crushed ants and carmine beetles, which gave a deep red pigment, to adorn her lips.

Having sexier, youthful lips is a lot easier these days. Here are a few of my Aging Backwards tips for lips:

  1. Tone it down. It may seem counterintuitive, but as we age, we actually need less makeup, not more, according to Bruce Grayson, celebrity makeup artist for both the Emmy awards and the Oscars. Instead of bright or dark lipstick, stick with a color that closely matches your natural shade and brush some clear gloss over it for a fresh, young daytime look. For evening, opt for a deeper shade of the daytime color and a tinted gloss.
  2. Go blue. To make teeth look dazzling white, choose lip colors with blue undertones, such as the lightest shades of wine, plum, or rosy pink. Skip the orange and coral lip colors – they can make teeth appear yellow.
  3. Exfoliate. Skin on the lips is delicate, but still needs to be exfoliated. My favorite trick is to use a clean toothbrush – minus the toothpaste, of course – to lightly brush my lips and exfoliate dead cells.
  4. Remember the lip liner. Outlining the lips with liner gives a more finished look to them and also keeps lipstick from “feathering” outside the natural lip line. My shortcut: I line my lips with a color that matches my natural lip color, then fill it in over the entire lip area. Then, I put a light gloss right over that, skipping lipstick altogether for a natural look that stays on longer.

Jackie’s Number One Aging Backwards Makeup Tip

At least once a week, even from complete strangers, I hear, “Your makeup looks so flawless, how do you do it?” Many people I know assume I spend a fortune on makeup, but I don’t! The secret to flawless makeup is not the makeup itself, but rather a simple little trick for applying it. I use a lighted magnification mirror. Any magnification over 10x is good. Beware: the first time you see your face magnified 10 or more times can be shocking, but once you get past the initial surprise (and possible dread), that mirror will become your best friend. To get that “flawless” look, I also use a cosmetic sponge to blend my foundation, blush and eye shadow after applying them.

Here’s an Aging Backwards tip. When I have free time, I like to have the makeup artists at the department store counters give me a free makeover, which they’re happy to do because I may buy their products. I always tip them well, that way I don’t feel guilty about going to the drugstores and buying comparable products at a fraction of the price. Foundation is super important, and I recommend Sheer Cover It goes on beautifully, providing plenty of coverage, but without looking heavy. It can be a little dry, so I make sure to use an SPF 30 moisturizer right before I apply the mineral powder. Use the information you receive from the department store makeup artist to choose the appropriate Sheer Cover color for you! Here’s another Aging Backwards tip: You can get free samples of a fabulous line of new cosmetics for women “our age” by calling: 1-800-RADIANT (1-800-723-4268).

Face “Perfektion”

I’m always on the lookout for the latest, greatest products to keep me Aging Backwards. I happened to walk into Sephora in Santa Barbara last week and discovered something new and wonderful – Per-fekt Skin Perfection Gel. Finding the right foundation has always been a challenge for me.

If the color is perfect, the texture is wrong. Sometimes I love the texture, but I can’t find the correct color. Per-fekt is perfect. The product’s creator, Richard Anderson, gave me a hands-on demo. It glided on like silk and “magically” adapted itself to my skin tone with a flawless finish. Richard also told me that I can “layer” Per-fect for more coverage. He said makeup artists in Hollywood are using it to make stars look younger on-camera. I thought it made me look younger and anything that keeps me Aging Backwards is right up my alley.
