Shortcut to Happiness

If you’re already in a relationship or you’re looking for your "soul mate," you can only make things better for both of you if you’re happy within yourself, not dependent on someone else to "make" you happy. In fact, studies show that happily married couples live longer, healthier lives than single people. So, how can you just "make yourself happy?" Try these tips for a new attitude that just may make you, and those around you, smile more often.

Aging Backwards Happy Tips:

  1. Volunteer. Numerous scientific studies show that acts of kindness can result in significant mental and physical health benefits. Helping can bring on a rush of euphoria, followed by a longer period of calm, often called a "helper’s high" that releases the body’s natural painkiller, endorphins, thus reversing feelings of depression, hostility and stress. The greater the frequency of volunteering, the greater the health benefits.

    Keep in mind these statistics:

    • Personal contact with the people being helped is important.
    • Helper’s high results most from helping people we don’t know.
    • Regular club attendance, volunteering, entertaining or faith group attendance is the happiness equivalent of getting a college degree or more than doubling your income.
  2. Fake a smile. Charles Schaefer, psychology professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey, found in his research that even self-imposed smiling and forced laughter can boost mood and psychological well-being tremendously. "Phony laughter works because your body doesn’t know it’s fake, even though your brain might," he says. "Once the brain signals the body to laugh, the body doesn’t care why. It’s going to release endorphins; it’s going to relieve stress as a natural physiological response to the physical act of laughing," he adds.
  3. Express gratitude, often. According to Tal Ben-Shahar, author and lecturer at Harvard University, "We too often take our lives for granted. Learn to appreciate and savor the wonderful things in life, from people to food, from nature to a smile." He is the author of numerous books including, Happier: Learn the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment (2007).

Once you find your own inner happiness, you’ll be surprised at how other areas in your life will start to blossom. You’ll treat others differently, people will react differently to you and you could take your romantic relationship to a whole new level.

Have a Youthful Day,

New Year, New Youth

With just a few more weeks left in 2011, many people begin to think about their New Year’s Resolutions.

Biting off more than you can chew with a long list of resolutions is not only counterproductive, but can also leave you stressed. Not to mention guilt-ridden if you’re unable to stick with all of them. There’s even an unofficial “Break Your Resolutions Day” on January 17th of each year. And I’m pretty sure you don’t want to celebrate that.

Even the United States Government gets in on the action with a list of popular resolutions on its Web site here. It includes many health-related resolutions such as: Reduce Weight, Quit Smoking, Get Fit, Manage Stress and more.

Why not make a resolution this year to make your resolution list shorter and more manageable?

According to Seth W. Lieberman, CEO of Pangea Media in Boston, MA, a CEO has only three things on his or her “to do” list: Money — don’t run out of cash; Vision — set the vision and strategy; and Team — support the team.1

This year, be the CEO of your own life with just three “to-dos” for 2012.

1. Ditch your old exercise routine and get with the program – the P.A.C.E. program, that is. Dr. Al Sears, M.D. has studied the science of exercise for more than 25 years. He’s found that just 12 minutes a day of the right kind of exercise is all you need to build a stronger heart and lungs, and to get and stay in shape. You’ve heard the term “intervals.” But P.A.C.E., which stands for Progressively Accelerating Cardiopulmonary Exertion, is about more than just plain intervals. It’s progressively more intense, yet shorter bursts of exercise – or intervals – that do the trick. And everybody can squeeze in just 12 minutes of exercise a day in 24 hours!

2. Lower your sugar intake. Experts believe that a lifetime of overeating sugar can cause wrinkles. A natural process called glycation is the culprit. With glycation, sugar in your bloodstream attaches to proteins to form harmful new molecules called "advanced glycation end products," or AGEs, appropriately. The more sugar you eat, the more AGEs you develop. The more AGES you develop, the more they damage adjacent proteins in a domino-like fashion, according to Fredric Brandt, MD, a dermatologist and author of “10 Minutes/10 Years.”

Besides damaging collagen, a high-sugar diet also affects the type of collagen you have. (Another factor in how resistant skin is to wrinkling.) The most abundant collagen types in the skin are I, II and III, with type III being the most stable and long-lasting. Glycation turns type III collagen into type I. This is more fragile, making the skin look and feel less supple. It also leaves you more vulnerable to sun damage. Diabetics can have up to 50 times the number of AGEs in their skin than non-diabetics.

3. Take your health high-tech with infrared sauna. If you’ve ever sat in a traditional hot rock sauna, the type which many people call "dry heat," you probably remember finding it hard to breathe or burning yourself on the hot benches or walls. Today’s infrared saunas allow you to accomplish a deeper sweat at a lower temperature. This lets you sit more comfortably than other types of saunas, eliminating that "burning" sensation and making it easier to stay in the sauna for 30 or more minutes at a time.

The Journal of American College of Cardiology reports that infrared sauna treatments significantly increase circulation, improve heart health and aid in weight reduction. And many Americans are finally catching on to the benefits of having a home sauna. Residents of other countries have embraced home saunas for ages. In Finland, for example, where the modern sauna was created, home saunas are the norm and there are more saunas than cars – one sauna for every three Finns.

One company that is taking the sauna world by storm is Kansas-based Sunlighten, Inc., which has created a new line of saunas that are the first ever to feature full-spectrum infrared heaters. In fact, Sunlighten’s saunas are the only infrared saunas clinically shown to lower blood pressure, in a study done at the University of Missouri, Kansas City.

The infrared rays used in a Sunlighten Sauna are the same type of light energy emitted naturally by the sun. But without the hazards of skin-damaging UV rays. Infrared heat penetrates deep into the skin, raising your body’s core temperature without excessively heating the air around you, like traditional saunas do. The result is the most effective, comfortable sauna experience. And this provides optimum health benefits.

Perfectly Excellent

Do you consider yourself to be a perfectionist? I must admit, I have a bit of a perfectionist streak in me. It’s something I’m learning to resist. In fact, Dr. Mollie Marti, founder of BestLifeDesign.com, suggested that I "strive for excellence, not perfection." I let that sink in and realized we don’t have to be perfect. Perfection is totally unattainable anyway, so why not be the most "excellent" we can be in all areas, including the way we look and feel?

People ask me all the time, "What is Aging Backwards? It sounds like a great idea, but too much work." The reality is, you can look and feel younger with minimal effort if you break it down into small, manageable daily habits, striving for excellence rather than perfection. Here are just a few practical and realistic tips for looking and feeling younger and healthier, excellently:

1) Free hormone balancing. They don’t call it "beauty rest" for nothing! Our bodies seem to tune up while we’re sleeping. Sleep deprivation has actually been shown to alter the production and action of hormones. Sleep is essential for repair and rejuvenation and experts say seven-eight hours is optimal. How can you get the best rest? Keep your room dark — light disrupts the production of the important hormone melatonin, which helps regulate your natural sleep cycle. Stay off your cell — a recent study out of the U.K. suggests that using your cell phone too close to bedtime actually interrupts your sleep. And yes, regular exercise helps you sleep better.

2) Lose the stress. According to WebMD.com, 75 to 90 percent of all doctor visits are due to stress-related ailments and complaints. Up to 90 percent? That’s huge! Chronic stress is not only detrimental to your health, but it also ages you. Stress can bring on a variety of skin issues, from acne to excess dryness to dull-looking skin and frown lines. Some doctors even think stress may be the primary cause of unexplained hair loss. So, what can you do for instant stress relief? Without even realizing it, many people clench their jaws when feeling stressed. Try these quick and easy jaw exercises: 1) Open your mouth as wide as you can, hold for three seconds, repeat for a total of three times. 2) Try to open your mouth, but resist with your hands three times. 3) Massage the joint in the middle of your face where your jaw hinges. 4) Massage the muscles under your ears behind your jaw.

3) Get involved. Studies show that socializing is good for your brain. To quote an article in The Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, "The more participants interacted socially by talking to and visiting friends and relatives, the better their performance on the measure of cognitive functioning." In another study in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, a University of California Los Angeles team found that for middle-aged and older people, using the internet helps boost brain power. So here’s my take: Combine socializing and the internet (social media) on sites such as Twitter (follow me – @AgingBackwards & @MyPureRadiance), have Tweetups IRL (in real life) and you’ve got the makings of a mega-brain!

You can see that getting some sleep, reducing stress and socializing are three easy habits that can deliver excellent benefits. Perfectionism = stress. Striving for excellence = healthy challenge.

Cheep, Cheep Fun

It has been proven that chronic stress can cause premature aging. Elissa Epel, Ph.D., and her colleagues from the University of California, San Francisco’s psychiatry department found that while hormonal changes are a normal part of aging, chronic stress can alter the body’s delicate hormonal balance.

You’re probably familiar with stress-relieving techniques such as yoga and deep breathing, but why not try something different? I recently spent a week at Rancho La Puerta spa in Tecate, Mexico, where I had the opportunity to try some new things. Among them – bird watching.

Bird watching may not be the first thing you think of for relaxation, but it can be an excellent way to relieve stress. Not only does spotting the myriad varieties of birds let you enjoy the calming effects of communing with nature, but the birds’ songs, chirps, warbles, tweets and twitters can relax you as well.

Aging Backwards Bird Watching Tips:

  1. Go where the birds are. Not sure where to start looking for birds? Try the Top 200 North American Birding Hot Spots website by Peter W. Thayer.
  2. Get some binoculars. Look for binoculars with “image stabilization” to keep them from shaking because, chances are, you’ll be looking at the birds from a distance. While you’re at it, you may want to get a digital recorder that you can attach to your binoculars, such as RememBird. Weighing less than two ounces and using a single AAA battery, it allows you to whisper into it without ever taking your eye off the bird.
  3. Familiarize yourself. These days, you don’t even need to buy a bird book to learn about the various species of birds. AvianWeb.com has a comprehensive index from A to Z that not only features photos of the birds for easy identification, but also gives encyclopedic explanations about each type.

There are millions of birds out there just waiting to be spotted and heard. To help support wild birds and their habitats, visit Audubon.org, where you can find a fascinating timeline of the history of the Audubon Society. Audubon’s mission is “to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the earth’s biological diversity.”

This Just Makes Good Scents

Did you know your sense of smell helps you enjoy life? It can also help you avoid danger. Whether it’s the delicious aroma of your favorite foods, the sweet fragrance of flowers, the warning scent of a gas leak, or the smell of smoke from a fire, your nose is always on alert.

Your sense of smell is also intricately linked to memory, learning, and emotions. It can positively influence your quality of life, sense of well-being, and mood.

Smell is also linked to healing, which is known as aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is the practice of using sweet-smelling essential oils for their curative properties. Essential oils are the aromatic oils distilled from plants. These oils can be inhaled, applied to the skin, or ingested.

“We are 100% chemical beings, and the essential oils are pure chemistry,” says Cary Caster, founder of 21 Drops, a line of therapeutic-grade, 100% natural essential oils. Caster is also a certified clinical aromatherapist. She holds academic and clinical degrees in Anatomy, Physiology, and Blending from institutions in the United States, United Kingdom, and France.

Caster stresses that while essential oils are widely available, blending them is both an art and a science and should be done by a professional. “People should be aware that when they buy ‘pure essential oil’ they can actually become over-exposed to the oil, which can cause sensitivities,” she warns. Caster carefully blends her essential oil combinations in the correct ratios for maximum results and safety.

Using plants for medicinal purposes is nothing new. Hippocrates mixed powder from the bark and leaves of willow trees to cure headaches, pain, and fever. His discovery eventually led to the formulation (some 2,000 years later) of modern-day aspirin.

History reveals that even the ancient Egyptians soaked the bandages of their pharaohs with aromatic essential oils.

In the 1920s, French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse stumbled across the medicinal properties of lavender oil when treating his burned arm. This gave rise to our current use of therapeutic essentials.

Modern-day uses for essential oils include combating stress, improving sleep, boosting immunity, curing a hangover, and decongesting, just to name a few.

Until fairly recently, how our sense of smell really works was somewhat of a mystery. Then, in 1991, Drs. Richard Axel and Linda Buck published their research on the genetics of the olfactory system. They received a Nobel Prize in 2004 for their work. Their discoveries provided scientists with the key for further research to better understand how smells are processed and remembered, as well as how they can impact our emotions.

The Sense of Smell institute, which is the research and education division of The Fragrance Foundation, states that “Since [Axel and Buck’s discoveries], great strides have been made in our understanding of the sense of smell.” The Institute is the non-profit, educational arm of the international fragrance industry.

Here are a few fun facts about smell from The Sense of Smell Institute:

  • The average human being is able to recognize approximately 10,000 different odors.
  • A woman’s sense of smell is keener than a man’s.
  • Your sense of smell is least acute in the morning. But, your ability to perceive odors increases as the day wears on.

Nourish Your Body The Tropical Way

Have you ever cracked open a coconut?

It’s not exactly the easiest thing to cut up and use. Yet, this hard-shelled, husk-covered tropical fruit offers an abundance of healing properties.

Like many of the most powerful natural remedies, coconuts have been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times. Only recently have they gotten recognition by modern medicine for their wide range of health benefits.

Not only that, but health benefits can be derived from almost every layer of the coconut. This includes the coconut flesh, fruit, water, milk and oil.

Coconut water, or the water found inside a fresh, usually green coconut, is particularly fascinating. According to recent research, regular consumption of coconut water can:1

•    Aid in digestion and calm acid reflux
•    Improve blood circulation
•    Serve as an excellent source of calcium, magnesium, potassium and fiber
•    Reduce the risk of cancer
•    Boost HDL cholesterol levels (that’s your “good” cholesterol)

… and that’s just the beginning.

Coconut oil, on the other hand, can

•    Soften the hair and condition the scalp when used as a conditioner
•    Help heal and repair dry, cracked skin
•    Prevent the formation of destructive, free radicals when used in a lotion

Then there’s the coconut peptide. Peptides are important ingredients in today’s cutting-edge anti-aging skincare products. From a molecular point of view, peptides are actually the building blocks of proteins. They have the ability to influence cells in different ways, so they perform certain functions.

Peptides have this influence because of their ability to enter skin cells while remaining intact.2 Even better, they can penetrate the protective barriers of the skin to have an effect on the deeper layers.3

Coconut peptides offer rejuvenation benefits that include:

•    Cell regeneration
•    Improved collagen production

These two benefits promote younger, fresher looking skin.

I’m so impressed with the benefits of coconut peptides I’ve decided to include them as a primary ingredient in a new age-defying moisturizer I’m developing. I can promise you it will be a riveting, natural new way to protect your skin from the effects of aging.

I’ll let you know as soon as it’s available!

In the meantime, enjoy some coconut. No matter what form of the fruit you choose, it’s likely to benefit your health in some way.

Tis Is Sweet, Honey!

honey

Did you know honey does a lot more than sweeten your tea and baked goods? This natural treat also moisturizes, sanitizes and even reduces inflammation.

In fact, honey has been used for healing purposes since ancient times, most commonly as a wound disinfectant. Plus, the fact that honey never goes bad made it extremely useful to keep on hand before modern refrigeration was invented.

A tomb uncovered in the Egyptian Valley of the Kings proved honey was used when pharaohs reigned. According to TourEgypt.com, “Some vessels that were uncorked by the archeologists still contained honey that was almost liquid.” Incredibly, the sweet scent had been preserved despite the thousands of years that had passed.

When antibiotics came into use, dressing wounds with honey gradually fell by the wayside. Lately though, medical practitioners are starting to bring it back.

That’s because honey is not only natural, it has remarkable anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Honey also has been shown to speed up the healing process with minimal scarring.

Really Raw Honey is a Maryland-based company that specializes in bringing beekeepers together and getting their products out to the public. “Our honey is packed on-site at the beekeepers’ homes and farms, straight from the hive,” explains company owner Frantz Walker.

Really Raw Honey recommends these helpful home remedies:

• Honey as the ultimate moisturizer – Simply smooth a small amount of raw honey lightly over your skin. You can easily remove it later with splashes of cold water or comfortable warm water. Your skin will feel baby soft.

• Honey as an antibacterial soap – Wash with raw honey straight from the jar and enjoy sparkling clean skin. Facial blemishes and acne caused by cosmetics or allergies will clear up quickly if you use this treatment nightly. All it takes is a dab of raw honey right on the blemish.

• Honey for hair and scalp treatment – Apply raw honey (with or without olive oil) to dry or damp hair. Leave it in your hair for a half hour before washing.

I was so impressed with the unique moisturizing and healing qualities of honey that I’ve included it as an ingredient in my brand-new, age-defying skin complex that’s under development. I plan to introduce the new formula very soon right here in Aging Backwards. As soon as it’s ready, you’ll be the first to hear about it!

Four Steps to Younger, Brighter Skin for the New Year

iStock_000012533993Small

When you look for advice on skin care, you probably see so much conflicting information that you find it nearly impossible to figure out what’s right for you and your particular skin type.

So let’s cut through all the hype and the fantastic claims and listen to my good friend Al Sears, MD.

He sees patients every day at his clinic in Florida and he tells me it boils down to these four very simple things you can do right now to keep your skin looking healthy and vibrant during the holidays and all year long:

Step 1: Start on the inside with plenty of water and good nutrition. It’s simple … nourish yourself and you’ll nourish your skin as well.

Two of the best nutrients for your skin are gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and vitamin C. That’s because your skin uses vitamin C to make collagen, the protein that’s the biggest component of your skin. And your body uses GLA to help keep your skin hydrated and inflammation-free.

There’s lots of GLA in walnuts, pumpkin seeds, avocados and oils like borage oil and black currant oil. One of the richest sources of GLA is Sacha Inchi oil from Peru. It’s almost 50 percent GLA.

A great source of vitamin C is parsley. Did you know it has three times as much vitamin C as an orange? You can also get healthy amounts of vitamin C from vegetables such as broccoli and kale. Acerola cherries are also very high in vitamin C.

Step 2: Wash your face with a gentle cleanser.

When it comes to your face, it’s important to choose a gentle face wash. You want a cleanser that’ll remove dirt and make up without damaging your skin.

Steer clear of cleansers that contain parabens, mineral oil, petroleum and artificial fragrances. These things can irritate your skin and rob it of natural moisture.

Instead, choose a cleanser that contains olive oil to gently remove dirt and pollutants.

Over-washing your face can be drying, so wash your face only twice a day – once in the morning when you wake up and at night before you go to bed.

Quick Tip: Never sleep with make up on. This can cause clogged pores, acne and premature aging.

Step 3: Apply a revitalizing toner.

This step helps minimize your pores and restores the tight, smooth skin you want.

After washing your face, saturate a cotton ball with a toner. Apply lightly in a circular motion, avoiding the eye area.

Stay away from toners that contain alcohol, which strip the natural moisture from your skin. This can cause dryness, irritation and premature aging.

Instead, choose a toner that contains CoQ10. It helps you retain moisture and replenish essential nutrients.

Step 4: Don’t forget to moisturize.

Moisturizing is one of the most important things you can do to combat the aging process.

Dr. Sears recommends a moisturizer that contains teprenone, which has anti-aging benefits. It helps enhance cell function and improves the overall quality of your skin.

He’s created an all-natural skin-care regimen that covers all the bases of healthy vibrant skin, including a purifying cleanser, a revitalizing toner and a moisturizing rejuvenation cream. No more guesswork or confusion. His patients love it and so do I!

I’m really excited about this: As a special holiday gift to you, I’ve arranged for you to receive a 20% discount and FREE shipping on the Pure Radiance Ultimate Skin Care Regimen from Dr. Sears.

And it’s 100% risk-free … if you don’t agree that it’s the best way to keep your skin healthy and looking great, you can return it to Dr. Sears for a complete refund.

Not Your Grandma’s Beauty Hints

beauty_treatment

Beauty regimens have come a long way in the past 50 years. Just ask Annette Tucker of Los Angeles who is Aging Backwards at 75 years young! Tucker, a very successful songwriter with such hits as I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night) made famous by the Electric Prunes in the 1960s, still keeps her glamorous, show-biz looks, but her routine is quite different than it was back then. In a phone interview with Ms. Tucker, she talked about skin care in the old days. “We all used the same products. There wasn’t the variety of choices that you find now. For example, everyone simply used Pond’s Cold Cream to take off makeup,” she remembered. “We all used the same shampoo – Prell – and we used Henna in our hair to bring out the red highlights. Grandmothers at that time were not into anti-aging at all. They left their hair gray and would grow it long and twist it into a bun.”

When it came to diet, there was no such thing. “We ate French Fries, onion rings and hamburgers and drank malts and milk shakes. We didn’t worry about our weight at all, but you’d walk everywhere back then. We didn’t consciously exercise, but we didn’t have to because of all the walking,” explained Tucker.

Let’s take a look at today’s beauty secrets compared to 50 years ago.

Beauty Secrets Yesterday And Today:

1) Lips yesterday: “We didn’t even line our lips back then. If someone’s upper lip was too thin, they’d just use lipstick above the lip line,” explained Tucker.

Lips today: Not only are there hundreds of lip liners and lipsticks in every shade imaginable, but there are lip plumpers, lip glosses and even lip makeovers. If your lips are too thin, you can have fillers injected, such as Restylane. Doctors can even move fat from one part of your body (thighs or abdomen) and insert it into your lips for a longer-lasting effect.

2) Noses yesterday: Rhinoplasty, more commonly called a nose job, has actually been around for thousands of years. One of the first known uses of plastic surgery dates back to 3,000 B.C. when Egyptians used reconstructive surgery to repair facial injuries. “Hardly anybody had any kind of plastic surgery when I was younger, although some people did have their noses made smaller,” said Tucker.

Noses today: Now, it’s easier than ever to change the shape of one’s nose using a non-surgical procedure such as the “15-Minute Nose Job,” pioneered by New York cosmetic dermatologic surgeon Dr. Cameron Rokhsar. He injects Radiesse,a long-lasting dermal filler, into the nose with the patient wide-awake and sitting up, then shapes the filler to achieve the symmetrical look desired. In fact, he welcomes the patient’s input while he performs the procedure.

3) Teeth yesterday: According to Tucker, people wore braces and had their teeth cleaned every so often, but there were no tooth-whitening products available. “We used baking soda,” she recalls.

Teeth today: You can choose from a myriad of ways to achieve a Hollywood smile these days and it’s faster and easier than ever. Tooth whitening products line the drugstore shelves. Your dentist has a bag of tricks to give you perfect pearly whites which includes in-office whitening for instant results orLumineers, contact lens-thin, super translucent porcelain veneers that go right over your own teeth and last up to 20 years.

4) Earlobes yesterday: “Some people had pierced ears, but a lot of us wore clip-on earrings. As I’ve aged and my earlobes have lost elasticity, I want to wear clip-on earrings but you can’t even find them anymore,” said Tucker.

Earlobes today: How about an “earlobe makeover” to take years off your face? It sounds ridiculous, but I’m living proof that it works. I was undergoing a radio frequency-based treatment to tighten the skin on my face with Accent by Alma Lasers when Dawn, my beauty Goddess, said, “Let’s do your earlobes.” Do my earlobes? She proceeded to “zap” my earlobes with the Accent and instantly I went from sporting saggy, baggy, stretched earlobes to firm, young, plump earlobes. Some doctors use dermal fillers to plump up thin, sagging earlobes that have seen the effects of age and excessive phone use. Watch a video HERE.

5) Necks yesterday: “A few people would have face lifts, but neck lifts were pretty much unheard of,” recalled Tucker.

Necks today: The neck is the first place to look if you want to guess a person’s age because the neck begins to show age symptoms faster than any other area. Vaser can remove unwanted fat from a double chin, SmartLipo removes fat while tightening the skin at the same time and Botox Cosmetic can be used to soften the look of the platysma bands, the thick bands of muscle in the front of the neck that often bulge through thinner, aging skin.

It’s been said that 50 is the new 30. With these relatively easy makeovers, you just may find yourself Aging Backwards.

Soften Your Skin While You Cook!

coconut_oil

New research has shown that coconut oil is actually good for you! (Read the research here) I have found that unlike vegetable oil or olive oil, I only need a tiny bit of coconut oil when cooking. And it imparts a delicious, unusual flavor to eggs, veggies or whatever you cook in it. But here’s the best part and an Aging Backwards secret: While I’m cooking, I take some coconut oil and rub it into my hands, feet, elbows, anywhere I feel dry! I also keep some by the shower to use as a delicious-smelling body lotion or even to shave with. Since it’s all-natural, you can use it in an infinite number of creative ways! Coconut Oil
