Not-So-Special Specials

Category: General Date: 11/03/2007

What was I thinking? Recently, I received an email offering "beauty treatments" at a very reduced price and, of course, I wanted to take advantage of it - who wouldn't, right? I learned a valuable lesson. Many of these treatments require multiple visits to achieve the best result and I know that, but the "bargain shopper" in me just couldn't resist. So I booked a few treatments and here's what happened: The first one was microdermabrasion. What could go wrong there? I've had it done many times and microdermabrasion is one beauty treatment that gives immediate results. I like it for its exfoliating properties. This particular treatment was offered by a doctor who specializes in reducing the appearance of veins, a problem I don't suffer from, thankfully. This was my first visit to this office and I did not know the doctor nor his reputation. Coincidentally, after the microdermabrasion was done, I noticed some broken capillaries on my face that hadn't been there before the procedure.

The next appointment I booked was a "hand rejuvenation" using the ELOS laser, of which I am a fan. I've had ELOS laser treatments in the past with excellent results. Problem is, I was only planning on having this one treatment at a fraction of the regular cost, just to "refresh" the tops of my hands, which were almost perfect to begin with, to be honest. The ELOS laser brings out the sun damage lurking underneath so spots that you couldn't see before are visible after the treatment. They are supposed to "flake off" after a few days but, unfortunately, mine didn't. Then I remembered that it takes a few treatments, several weeks apart, to get the best result from the laser. By the time I would be ready for another treatment, the "special" would be over and the price would be back up to about $250.00!! I had to then go to my regular "beauty expert," Dr. Bart Rademaker at Rejuva MedSpa in Tampa, to fix the damage on my hands...the same hands that used to look great but now had dark spots all over them. Dawn at Rejuva fixed me up and my hands are back to normal. I guess I was fortunate that the third "bargain" treatment I made an appointment for, a "chest rejuvenation," got canceled twice! Lesson learned: sometimes a "special price" can cost more than you bargained for. I learned that lesson the hard way.
